Light it up - our top tips!

Use front and back lights if you ride between sunset and sunrise, or if visibility is poor.

If you ride at night, wear something light, bright or reflective. A backpack cover is a great option. 

We recommend two lights in front and two lights rear, one steady and one flashing in each direction. 

Don’t dazzle other walkers and riders – point your front light down a bit.  

Bikes must have pedal reflectors, or you must wear reflective material when riding at night.  Increase your side-on visibility with reflectors or lights on your spokes, and tires with reflective side walls. 

As cycling numbers increase, so do attempts at bike theft.  But there are easy steps you can follow to reduce your risk of getting your bike stolen.

Love your bike? Lock it up well!

Here are our top tips to lock your bike like a pro:

• If your bike is stolen always report it to the Police by calling 105 or go to the police website.
• Buy a good D-lock or chain lock. Thin cable locks are easy to cut. If you have a high-end bike or an e-bike, buy a great lock, and use two types.  
• Lock your bike through the frame, not just a wheel or around the forks.  
• Find somewhere solid to lock your bike. A bike rack is best. Some signposts aren’t fixed in place.  
• Be kind. Don’t block paths or doorways and think of other users.
• Be sure to lock your bike at home, work, and school. Don’t leave your bike in a shared area or an open yard, garage, or carport.
