Terrestrial ecology

Updated 12 July 2019 12:14pm

Greater Wellington monitors terrestrial ecosystem health in high value biodiversity sites in the region, such as those in Greater Wellington's parks and forests. We measure bird distribution and abundance, forest regeneration and tree health, as well as pest abundance and impacts.

We investigate bird nesting success and effectiveness of pest plant controls and are involved in surveys of a range of ecosystems and species, including lizards, snails and invertebrates. One major collaborative project is Project Kaka, where we are working with the Department of Conservation to measure the ecological outcomes of wide-scale possum control.

We are part of the Regional Council biodiversity indicators program that is being developed for use nation-wide. These indicators are to be used to quantify regional changes in indigenous ecosystem quantity and quality over time. Our team also run a permit system for the collection of plant material in the regional parks and forests and carry out impact assessments for activities in those areas.
