Wainuiomata Recreation Area/Water Collection Area

Join us for a rare chance to explore the lush native forests and crystal clear rivers of the Wainuiomata/Orongorongo water catchment, a beautiful area not usually open to the public. We offer two different free guided walks in this area.

Water Walks

In this guided walk you'll find out how we harvest the fresh river water and transport it to our communties. Our guides will entertain and inform you about the role the area plays in providing water for Wellington.

Old Forest Walks

Immerse yourself in our pristine lowland native forest, one of the most significant lowland podocarp forests in the lower North Island and an area rich in bird and plant species.

Queen Elizabeth Park

Guided Wetland Walk

Queen Elizabeth Park is one of our busiest regional parks but there are still hidden secrets to discover. Want to find out what they are? Come along to the ranger guided tour of the Wetland Loop to hear the stories behind the nature and history of this track.
