Boosting our water supply resilience
Seismic strengthening has begun at the Waterloo Water Treatment Plant in Lower Hutt to help ensure that water supply perations can recover quickly following a major earthquake.
The Regional Council’s high priority buildings – the treatment plants at Waterloo, Te Marua and Wainuiomata – will be strengthened to new building standards, reducing the possibility of damage and the time taken to get water flowing after a major earthquake.
An updated emergency water supply strategy is currently being developed, based on recent GNS impact modelling.
Work on the water treatment plants is expected to be completed by November this year and strengthening will then continue on the remaining water supply buildings, such as pump stations.
