Attracting and retaining tech skills to keep the region growing

Wellington’s technology sector is thriving but this high growth in high tech also means there are skills shortages and more than 500 vacancies right now.

A Victoria University recent study of 113 high-tech companies in Wellington found that more than a third of senior managers couldn’t find the workers they needed from the Wellington region alone.

Regional economic development agency Grow Wellington, which is funded by the region’s councils through GWRC, is working hard to boost the local IT workforce and attract skilled people to fill these vacancies.

This year, Grow Wellington has promoted Wellington as a destination for skilled migrants at the South by Southwest (SXSW) trade show in Texas, at CeBIT in Sydney – the biggest technology event in Asia Pacific.

For the UK market, Grow Wellington has also teamed up with tech business Xero and recruitment firm 920 Career Agents, to find skilled staff who are being hired by Xero – a proven model that could work well for other companies.

Grow Wellington has developed the website as part of the campaign to showcase the region’s burgeoning high tech businesses and the opportunities here.

Meanwhile, here in the region, Grow Wellington works closely with education providers to develop the workforce and supports initiatives such as Summer of Tech internships and the Enspiral Dev Academy to ensure graduates have the skills companies are looking for.

Grow Wellington is also developing a regional skills plan for priority sectors, which includes information and communications technology.
